250 local shredders competed in the first ever banked slalom event in Eastern Canada on March 23rd. Based on the model of the Legendary Mt. Baker Banked Slalom, the BVSC Banked Slalom is an open registration event, featuring a course of banked-turns, winding its way down one of the most beautiful stretches of the Niagara Escarpment and landing at the clubhouse deck for the Apres party. Live music, apres snacks, skateboarding, silent & live auction fundraising for Rebecca’s Hope, and awards were all part of the day!

REBECCA’S HOPE for LEUKEMIA RESEARCH at PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL are the recipients of $9,000. This annual event is in honour of long time BVSC club member and committed snowboard community member Jackie Snarr who lost her life tragically in 2010 while riding her snowboard.

This year, BVSC was the first Canadian snow resort to lead the way and join The Climate Challenge. Implemented by the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), the Climate Challenge is a voluntary program that supports snow resorts in reducing their carbon footprint. The club measured it’s carbon footprint and set a reduction target:

Beaver Valley Ski Club is working to reduce it’s emissions by 6% of 2012 levels by 2020. That’s 26 fewer Metric tons of carbon emissions per year coming from the ski club.

 This cube represents 1 Metric Ton of carbon emissions (MTCO2). The club is aiming to reduce it’s greenhouse gas emissions by 26 of these cubes each year.

Prior to measuring the club’s 2012 greenhouse gas emissions, BVSC had implemented some major waste management and snow-making changes that reduced it’s footprint significantly.

Eugene along with his brother Sam were partners in the group that formed Beaver Valley Resorts Ltd.  In 1959, the new partnership proposed to purchase the top of the hill Davis property from Melville and McFarland when unexpected costs arose during the construction of new hills known as Lazee Loop and Roller Coaster.

Over the next several years a deal was struck to acquire an additional 90 acres of Weber property which enabled the main T-bar to be extended to 3,000 feet.  At the same time, a parking lot was established on the island at the base of the hill and two bridges were built.  Improvements to the lift and the introduction of the new clubhouse could not overcome a few years of a shortage of snow and the necessary public skier visits to make the club viable.

In 1968, a group of 200 committed chalet owners and season ticket holders purchased memberships at $500 each to purchase the 314 acre parcel of land known as Beaver Valley Ski Club from the partner group of Beaver Valley Resorts Ltd.  The purchase price was $375,000 with $100.000 payable on closing and the balance financed by way of a mortgage.

Eugene was the former owner & founder of the famous Mars Food breakfast diner at College & Bathurst in Toronto that has been serving 5 decades of bacon & eggs.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Joan of 62 years and his children & grandchildren.

Eugene is the uncle of Diane Mansell.

Sorry for the delay in posting Industry results, since this is our first Banked Slalom we felt it was necessary to define what qualifies in the Industry category which turned out to be a rider’s list of 61 Men & Women. Outside of coaches,  industry athletes means that you are working in the industry full time or at least the majority of the year in the industry. “Coaches” who designated themselves as industry will remain in the industry category.

Full time top pro or am athletes , Matt Morisson and Brad Gauley were removed from the rider’s list as it was felt that full time National Team athletes training for 2014 Olympics is a bit of a stretch to meet the definition of “working in the Industry”.  We are stoked that you came out!

Appropriately titled the GROMS GAMES @ BEAVER, the event offered non-stop fun and something for everyone, including prizes for not only the top five podium finishers, but all participating riders courtesy of over 25 of snowboarding’s leading brands.

With Snowboard Slopestyle debuting as the newest event at the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Groms Games @ Beaver and the Ontario Groms Park Series have become an important and popular grassroots development program for introducing and progressing the next generation of Slopestyle snowboarders. Over 200 kids participated throughout the season making it the biggest program of it’s kind in Canada.

Beaver riders had plenty to get excited about at the Groms Games scoring several podiums across the five age categories. See full results and photos below. A video of the Groms Games @ Beaver will be posted in the coming days.

Big thanks to the Beaver Valley Snow Parks crew and Snowboard Coaches who staged the event and put in countless hours of event prep, especially Caleb Bosse, head of Parks & Events; Shawn Letton, head coach; and Christy Deere, Events Coordinator. And thanks to all of the parent volunteers who assisted including Dave Robertson, Carol Koven, Andrew Hauerbach, Nancy Mills and Sandy Atkin.

The day ended with lots of sunshine and lots of very stoked riders.

Beaver’s 8 year old Jessica Baird scored a 2nd in her first ever Groms contest.

Beaver’s Chet Bartley was one of the smoothest on the Plaza ledges.

Beaver’s Andie Gendron was one of the first to make it to the end of 60 ft long Boxzilla.

Beaver’s mini-ramp was the centre of activity after the on-hill events wrapped up.
